Stress and Sinusitis

Sleep is necessary for survival and good health. An individual’s requirements for sleep vary widely; healthy adults may require as few as 4 hours or as many as 9 hours of sleep each and every night. How long a person sleeps and how rested a person feels on waking can however be influenced by many factors, including stress and sinusitis.

Emotions such as stress can affect certain body functions, such as

  • Heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Sleep patterns
  • Bowel movements

Stress, therefore, can cause physical symptoms even though no physical disease may be present. The body responds physiologically to emotional stress. When there is increased stress it is often accompanied by anxiety.

Anxiety is a response to stress, such as the breakup of an important relationship or exposure to a life-threatening disaster. Stress and anxiety affects sleeping patterns as a person usually cannot control their thoughts and calm their minds in preparation for sleep. The ability to tolerate anxiety varies among people, and determining what constitutes abnormal anxiety can be difficult. When anxiety occurs at inappropriate times or is so intense and long lasting that it interferes with a person’s normal activities such as sleep then it is usually considered a disorder.

It is important to control stress and anxiety as lack of sleep causes more stress on the body and can also lead to depression.

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses caused by an allergy or a viral, bacterial or fungal infection. It may develop in any of the four groups of sinus cavities:

  • Maxillary
  • Ethmoid
  • Frontal
  • Sphenoid

Classification of Sinusitis

Sinusitis may be classified as being acute or chronic.

  • Acute (short-lived) sinusitis may be caused by a variety of bacteria. It often develops after a viral infection in the upper airways, such as a common cold. During a cold, the swollen mucus membranes that line the nasal cavity tend to block the openings of the sinuses making drainage of nasal mucus difficult.
  • Acute and chronic sinusitis produces similar symptoms. There may be tenderness and swelling over the affected sinus area. Mucus membranes that are swollen also produce more mucus which then blocks the nasal passages.

The precise symptoms an individual may experience depend on which sinus is affected.

  • Maxillary sinusitis - produces pain over the cheeks just below the eyes, toothache and headache.
  • Frontal sinusitis- produces headaches and pains over the forehead.
  • Ethmoid sinusitis- produces pain behind and between the eyes as well as headaches over the forehead.
  • Sphenoid sinusitis – pain produced doesn’t occur in well defined areas and may be felt in the front or back of the head.

Sinusitis hampers breathing which makes it difficult to sleep. Other common symptoms of sinusitis also contribute to affecting sleep as sinus related pain can keep you awake. The action of lying down will also aggravate any post nasal drip caused by sinusitis as it may result in a person coughing or choking throughout the night.

Treating Stress and Sinusitis

It is important to treat the cause of the sleep disorder whether it be stress or sinusitis. It would be unwise and fruitless to administer sleeping tablets when the condition causing the sleep disturbance still exists. The root cause of one’s stress and anxiety will therefore need to be dealt with and the sinusitis symptoms managed to achieve long term relief.
